Royal Trinity Hospice has an exciting training opportunity for those with an interest in providing bereavement support. Through successful completion of an 8 session training programme applicants will join our Bereavement Service as a Bereavement Support Volunteer.

The Foundations to Bereavement Support Training Programme will provide trainees with relevant skills and knowledge in order to commence a safe and professional relationship with bereaved clients. As with any training, the more you put into the course in terms of personal reflection, participation in discussions and additional reading, the more you will gain from the programme. We hope that trainees will take responsibility for their learning and get as much out of the course as possible.

We also expect that this programme will play a role in increasing your own and society’s awareness of the needs of bereaved individuals and improve the quality of response to those needs both in the informal and formal setting.

The Training Programme consists of 18 modules, covered over the course of 8 Saturday workshops (9am-5pm).  There will be five different teaching modes for the training programme- lectures, seminars, skills practice, peer discussion and case studies.  The programme will also see trainees complete an essay, a reflective journal and a skills practice assessment.

The training comprises of a number of different modules:

  • Modules 1-3 focus on self-reflection and understanding our losses.
  • Modules 4-7 concentrate on grief and loss theoretical perspectives.
  • Modules 8-16 focus on the counselling/support skills required in bereavement support and the therapeutic relationship.
  • Modules 17-18 concentrate on the role of being a bereavement support volunteer at Royal Trinity Hospice and skills practice.

Trainees who do not attend 7 of the 8 sessions will not receive a certificate of completion. It is expected that you will attend every session, unless there are unavoidable circumstances.

Once trainees have completed the course they will be expected commit a minimum of 9 to 12 months, give around 3 to 4 hours per week and see a minimum of 2 to 3 clients per week. Volunteers are also required to attend monthly group supervision which is currently held on a Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.

Training dates are scheduled to run the following Saturdays from 9.00am to 5.00pm at Royal Trinity Hospice:

  • May 12th and 19th
  • June 2nd, 16th, 23rd and 30th
  • July 7th and 14th

Applications are welcome anytime however the vacancy closes Sunday 22nd April with the final opportunity to interview being held on Wednesday 2nd May.
