Overview of palliative care
This workshop is ideal for anyone new to palliative care or for those requiring an update. We will look at definitions; National Guidance; how palliative care works in our patch. We will also look at our attitudes to death and gain a basic understanding of the ‘hot topics’ in palliative care.
After death care and bereavement
In the morning of this workshop we will be practicing administering last offices and bereavement meetings. The competency for Registered Nurse Verification of Expected Death will be taught.
In the afternoon we will look at the process of simple and complex bereavement and explore different cultural aspects to death and dying.
Symptom control workshop 1
In this workshop we will learn how adopting a multi professional approach we can manage symptoms of pain, breathlessness and fatigue. There will also be an opportunity to understand one of the oncological emergencies.
Symptom control workshop 2
In this workshop we will be looking in depth at gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea and vomiting and altered bowel patterns.
We will also consider the part that abnormal blood results play in life limiting illnesses and how to understand and manage these symptoms.
Last Days of life (New format, full day workshop)
This day will be looking at the End of life care. It will cover Advance Care Planning; recognising dying; understanding terminal agitation. We will be exploring the medications used at end of life and the various routes of administration. There will be an opportunity to practice setting up syringe drivers.
Nutrition and ethics
The morning session will be run by our Quality Lead who is a dietician. In it we will explore the role of nutrition in palliative care. There will also be an opportunity to try supplements!
The afternoon session will take a closer look at the ethics of palliative care; some of the difficult questions patients and their families/carers may ask us and start to consider our response to these.
Our dementia nurses will lead this session on understanding different forms of dementia. There will also be plenty of empathy exercises to help us in our understanding of this increasingly common disease.
Co-ordinate My Care

The workshop will feature a demonstration of how to create a CMC record, followed by a drop in for delegates to ask any questions about using the CMC system.
