On 15 December 2021, some of the Royal Trinity Hospice retail team visited The Belham School in Peckham to talk to the Year 6 form about sustainable fashion. This rounded off a four-week project the students had undertaken in sustainability.

Leading on Trinity’s sustainability mission, Retail Director Daniel Holloway, Volunteers Manager Celia Abbott, and Retail Administration Assistant Maisie Lee, spoke to the children about the devastating impacts of fast fashion, and how to combat clothing waste by keeping clothing in circulation and extending the life of garments.

The team took with them some samples of rag (unsellable clothing) produced by Trinity’s shops, for the children to repair and upcycle using the sewing skills they had learnt during the project which had introduced them to zero-waste pattern cutting.

The students approached the subject with enthusiasm and an astonishing wealth of understanding about climate change and the importance of reusing and recycling. The experience made the whole Trinity team feel reinvigorated in our own mission and reassured us that the planet's future is in safe hands!
