We spoke to Jean about her role as a Trinity charity shop volunteer and what she enjoys most about it:

Why did you start volunteering with Trinity?

I live in Clapham and have helped out at four different Royal Trinity Hospice shops locally over the years. I now volunteer at the Clapham Common shop.

Can you explain a bit about what you do in your volunteer role?

I help front of house in the shop. This involves greeting customers as they come in, giving advice about the clothing, carrying out transactions on the till and building up relationships with local people from the community. There’s also an option to volunteer back of house and that involves sorting through donations and preparing the items so that they are ready for sale.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?

I love making a difference to someone’s shopping experience. We have some beautiful items in the store. I often get to know our regular customers well enough to suggest relevant new pieces when they come in which is a real pleasure. It’s also such a supportive environment. The team comes from all walks of life and we get along really well. For me, it’s my weekly morning out and about with friends!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering with Trinity?

There is something for everyone. Whether you like to be behind the scenes getting stuff done, or if you enjoy being out in front with the customers, it’s a great opportunity for anyone to learn new skills and get involved in their community.
